Masumi Sasaki Gallery is pleased to present “You and Me,” a solo exhibition by Isamu Gakiya, opening June 8.Since beginning his career as an artist, Gakiya has used painting, collage, drawing, and other techniques to create multilayered works that depict universal themes such as feelings of loneliness and love, as well as absurdities and religion encountered in life.

In addition to the diverse works Gakiya has produced to date, this exhibition will feature a new series of paintings depicting young girls.

Although Gakiya is well known for his drawings, as his Instagram (@guinea_mate_gaki), where he uploads his daily drawings, has more than 50,000 followers.
However, since beginning his career as an artist, he has also been actively producing paintings and collages, and in 2017, a group of works produced using these techniques was exhibited at the Okinawa Prefectural Museum of Art.This exhibition will also feature a mix of previously unpublished works, past works and new works created using a variety of techniques.

At this exhibition, a limited number of copies of the reprinted “CHILLDIE,” a book of works sold out at the drawing exhibition held at the end of each year and out of print, will be available with new pages added.

This exhibition will also be held at the newly opened Masumi Sasaki Gallery in Koto-ku, Tokyo.

Isamu Gakiya
Gakiya’s works, influenced by the remnants of American culture that remain in Okinawa, evoke the worldview of postwar American horror and science fiction films and American comic books, and the images that weave together various times and places reflect our lives in a mature modern society with myriad values and a large amount of information.
